The importance of getting dressed

With a quiet Christmas behind us and a brand new lockdown upon us, there may be little differentiation in what one wears to bed to what one wears during the day. Who can blame us? It's kind of inevitable given the cold, the confinement and extra Christmas food that had to be consumed by just a handful of people instead of the hordes of family, as planned.

But we're here to tell you, it's time to ditch the PJs - at least during the day, anyway. Why? Because we all need a boost right now and one of the best daily boosts you can give yourself is to get dressed - properly dressed - for the day.

Studies have found that there's strong psychological evidence in favour of maintaining our daily routines. Dr. Aurore Bardey, the course leader of the BA Psychology in Fashion at University of the Arts, London neatly sums it up. She explains: “Quarantine is stressful; you have to relax, work and exercise in the same space and each of these activities will require a specific outfit. If you wear your sportswear outfit, your mind will switch quickly to exercise. If you wear your work outfit, your mind will be more prepared for working.”

It's also about control. There is so much we can't control at the moment and that feeling of loss of control can impact your productivity and motivation to get things done. However, one thing we can control is our appearance. If you maintain your appearance you usually have at work, you'll feel more ready to work and you'll be more productive.

This doesn't mean you can't wear comfortable clothes - we're firm advocates of donning your slippers with whatever you're wearing! But wear what you love, what you're comfortable in and what makes you feel ready to face the day. Be in the mindset to present yourself to colleagues or clients on a video call, whether one is scheduled or not.
