Colour focus: Lilac & how to wear it

Colour focus: Lilac & how to wear it

No longer the chosen shade for elderly ladies' hair, lilac has been elevated to chic status once again. It made a quiet comeback in 2018 and has popped up each spring since, but this season it's bigger than ever.

Lilac represents youthfulness, spirituality and living in the moment. It's the boldest of the pastel shades and it takes a little confidence to wear it - but it gives that confidence right back to the wearer. And it works with almost any skin tone.

The big designers encourage us to wear it from head to toe this season, but if you're not feeling that, lilac pairs surprisingly well with black and grey, giving darker outfits a cool twist and toughening up the shade itself. It's also inevitably elegant with whites and blues. It works brilliantly in floral prints and soft knits, as a block colour in jackets and in old-new fabrics such as taffeta and organza if you're getting dressed up this summer - think old Hollywood glamour.

The flower lilac takes its name from blooms in late spring, signalling the onset of warmer, longer days with its sweet scent. Those days are just around the corner, so get set to grasp them. Live in the moment - lilac wants you to.
